Debbie Croft: It's spring in Mariposa

MARIPOSA -- So many choices, but only two weekends!

Today in northern Mariposa County, the Coulterville Museum will hold its Historical Afternoon Program, featuring "The Exploits of James Savage" Savage was the first white man allowed into the Groveland area by American Indians because of his many notable characteristics. The presentation begins at 2 p.m. for a small fee. Call Gail Tyler at (209) 878-3015 for details.

The Democratic Club's annual fundraiser will feature gourmet soups, plus a tribute to Americans of the 1930s who endured hard times. Eric Bauman, chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, will be the keynote speaker. For more information, call Nancy or Julie at (209) 742-5236.

Some special events for future brides include the "With This Ring Bridal Show" on Sunday and the Yosemite Wedding Venue Tour on April 26. Information for both events can be found at the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce's Web site, at info@californiabridalevents.com, or by calling (209) 966-3890 (for show) and (877) 700-BRIDE (for tour).

On April 25-26, the Agri-Nature Trail's "A Weekend in the Country" will also take place in Mariposa. The popular event introduces visitors to local culture, including ranches, farms and orchards, and other properties where native plants and wildlife thrive:

The Long View Stables, where western horsemanship has a European twist;

The Wire Ranch where sheep graze contentedly among wildflowers, and an experienced beekeeper will be on hand with his exhibit featuring nutritious raw honey;

And at the Mount Bullion Vineyard near Bear Valley. Besides wine tasting, picnicking and bocci ball, a professional photographer will be on hand to give tips on capturing beautiful nature shots.

Plus activities for kids at the Heritage Lavender Farm, where they'll be encouraged to develop gardening skills and an appreciation for nature's gifts.

For music lovers, the Mariposa Symphony Orchestra will present its concert in two locations. On Saturday, the MSO will perform in the Fiester Auditorium of Mariposa County High School, at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday at 1 p.m. the same concert will be performed in the Great Lounge of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park. Guest violinist, Lewis Wong, will accompany the orchestra. See www.arts-mariposa.org or call (209) 966-3155 or (800) 903-9936 for more information.

Details to most of these events can be found at the Chamber's Web site: www.mariposachamber.org or by calling (209) 966-2456.

Oh -- and did I mention the wildflowers are in bloom?

Indoors or out, it's a fine time for a drive through the country. Whether it's the refreshing colors and fragrances of springtime that draw you, or the sounds of our Symphony--Mariposa County once again has much to offer.
