Debbie Croft: Plenty of autumn events in the Sierra foothills
The trees are already losing their summer garb and dressing for fall. And nights have turned chilly as autumn arrives in the foothills.
Autumn’s a favorite season of many folks, but nature’s beauty isn’t the only lure to the Sierra communities. This time of year our annual events bring visitors back to our neck of the woods again and again. Maybe one of the following activities will interest you:

On the program are: Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to the Opera “William Tell,” also known as “The Lone Ranger” theme song; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy,” the final 1880 version; and “Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, Opus 10” by Antonin Dvorak. Program notes are available at the Mariposa County Arts Council website, www.mariposaartscouncil.org.
More than 60 musicians from Mariposa County and beyond comprise the orchestra, performing about half a dozen concerts each year.
Tickets are available at the high school office and the Mariposa Visitors Center. Call (209) 966-3155 or (209) 966-6081 for more information.
The public transit system connects gateway communities with Yosemite. When park employees and visitors choose to let someone else drive (and enjoy the scenery), they help reduce air pollution and traffic congestion. Entrance fees to the park are included in ticket prices. And free hybrid shuttles provide in-park transportation to most of the popular destinations.
Routes from Mariposa and Merced are open year-round. Mono County, Tuolumne Meadows, Groveland and Sonora’s high country routes are open through the summer. Bicycles and hiking gear are allowed on board. Visit www.yarts.com for maps, schedules and ticket information.
With so much to see and do amid golden hills, under deep blue skies, what’s keeping you from a Sierra getaway?
