Sober Fest in Merced aims to support drug and alcohol recovery
Substance abuse and related issues will be the focus of an event Saturday at the Merced County Courthouse Park, where more than two dozen local providers will be on hand to offer help and information.
This year will be Merced’s second celebration of Sober Fest, a drug and alcohol awareness, prevention and recovery event, being organized as part of National Recovery Month.
“It’s a statement that you can enjoy life without drugs and alcohol,” said Jason McClung, program manager for GEO Reentry Services.
The Merced County Sheriff's Office, Probation Department and GEO Reentry Services are among the agencies hosting the event, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This year, we are even more excited because of the success of last year’s (event),” McClung said.
Sober Fest 2015 attracted approximately 300 people, according to McClung, and this year close to 500 are expected.
McClung said anyone dealing with substance abuse issues can benefit greatly from the providers who will be there.
According to the county Department of Public Health’s 2016 Community Health Assessment, only 1.4 percent of adults in Merced County report seeking help for an alcohol- or drug-related issue.
“Part of our mission is to be a part of the community and provide support,” McClung said. “It’s a chance to get in touch with organizations.”
The event also has family-friendly events such as face painting, a bounce house, dance contest, motorcycle show, food vendors and giveaways.
“The more support a community has makes it a better place to live,” McClung said.
