Turkey giveaway comes to Merced next week

The Hostetler turkey giveaway, a highly anticipated holiday event in Merced County, is scheduled for Monday.

Those who hope to get a turkey should arrive at the grandstand at the Merced County Fairgrounds well before noon on Monday, when 500 turkeys will be handed out. Most years, people arrive in the early morning to snag a spot at the front of the line.

Another 500 turkeys will be given away at noon Tuesday at O’Banion Auditorium at the Los Banos Fairgrounds in Los Banos.

Developer Greg Hostetler hosts the annual tradition in memory of his wife, Cathie, who he said had a giving heart and donated turkeys to families during the holidays for nearly 30 years. After her death in 2010, Hostetler began giving away at least 500 turkeys each year in Merced County to help families in need.

Mike and Lori Gallo of Joseph Farms also donate to the event, typically handing out almonds and cheese.

To get a turkey, bring a form of identification, such as a driver’s license or proof of address. One turkey per household will be given out.
