The parking lots surrounding the Merced County Administration Building on M Street will see some upgrades beginning Monday that could require employees and visitors to park off-site.

Parking lot reconstruction will take place from Monday to July 17 at the 2222 M St. building to improve accessibility and repair deteriorated asphalt, according to a news release.

Improvements will be made to the north parking lot along 23rd Street, the south parking lot along 21st Street and a parking lot on Canal Street. Pavement will also be added to a county parking area on the east side of the administration building across Canal Street.

The parking lot project will cost $875,000, said county spokesman Mike North.

The work will be done in phases to try to cut down on the inconvenience to employees and visitors, according to the county’s staff. The two parking lots on Canal Street will see work from Monday to June 15. The parking lot south of the building is to be resurfaced from June 8-20. The north parking lot will be replaced June 16 to July 17.

Visitors and employees of the Merced County Administration Building should use alternate parking when possible. The county parking lot at M and 23rd streets, across from the Merced Superior Court, is open to visitors.

A smaller parking lot on 23rd Street, between the administration building and the U.S. Post Office, is open to county employees. Parking on surrounding surface streets is limited.

The county asks drivers be aware of the signage posted outside the construction sites.

In addition to the parking lots, work will be done to the north and south entryways of the administration building. Railing, push-button doors and walkway reconstruction will be done. The building will remain open while the work is being done, but access may be shifted to different sides of the buildings.

The work will be done by Avison Construction Inc., a Madera company.

The entryways project is expected to be complete by Aug. 1.
