Impaired driving enforcement to begin this week, according to Merced police
Beginning this week, additional officers will be looking for impaired drivers during the holiday season, according to the Merced Police Department.
Additional officers will be on patrol beginning Friday, December 13, through New Years Day, looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement campaign, according to a news release.
In addition to more officers on patrol, a DUI and Driver’s License checkpoint will be in place at an undisclosed location in the city, police said.
According to Sgt. Dan Dabney, police see more people driving impaired during this time of the year.
“There is no excuse for driving after drinking or using drugs that impair. There are many ways to get home safely without driving,” Dabney said, according to the news release.
Impaired driving is not just a result of consuming alcohol, according to police. Over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications and marijuana can also lead to impairment, especially when combined with alcohol and other drugs, authorities said.
Authorities suggest making non-alcoholic drinks available to guests designated as sober drivers when hosting a holiday party. Police also suggest offering to allow guests who have been drinking to stay the night or arrange for a ride-share service to take them home.
According to police, funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
