One person killed, two seriously injured in Merced County head-on collision, CHP says

One person is dead and two people were seriously injured Feb. 27 after a head-on collision in Merced County.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 2:06 a.m. at Santa Fe Drive, east of Avenue 2 when a 26-year-old Winton man was driving a 1996 Ford Ranger truck in the No. 1 lane on westbound Santa Fe Drive, east of Avenue 2 at an unknown speed.

A 33-year-old Merced driver was traveling in a 2020 Chevrolet sedan in the No. 1 lane eastbound Santa Fe Drive, east of Avenue 2 at 55 mph when for unknown reasons the Ford Ranger suddenly veered to the left and went head-on with the Chevrolet.

The Ford Ranger driver was pronounced dead. The Chevrolet driver and her passenger were taken to a local hospital with major injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
