Merced County Farm Bureau to host groundwater forum

The Merced County Farm Bureau on Tuesday will host a groundwater forum for members in its offices.

The forum is intended to provide a clearer understanding of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. The act requires several groundwater sustainability agencies be formed by June 2017. Four sub-basins within Merced County have been designated as high-priority groundwater basins by the state Department of Water Resources, which increases the department’s scrutiny of the region.

“It is imperative stakeholders and local growers have a better understanding of this law as this will affect every operation in the county,” Amanda Priest, executive director of the county Farm Bureau, said in a statement.

The forum will include three speakers: Jack Rice, associate counsel for California Farm Bureau Federation; Sarge Green, program director for the California Water Institute; and Priest.

Members can call 209-723-3001 or email info@mercedfarmbureau.org to RSVP for the event. Space is limited.
