Leadership Hermosa Beach celebrates mural unveiling on June 13

Leadership Hermosa Beach will unveil a new mural highlighting the Cypress District as the culmination of the group's 2026 project.

The mural is located at 601 Cypress Ave, but the official unveiling party will take place beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at 725 Cypress Ave.

The mural is more than 700 square feet and is the work of Hermosa Beach-based Josh Barnes, who has other public art in Hermosa including utility-box murals he painted in 2024.

"We want to include these different sort of elements, the surf elements, the board shaping, the painting, the music stuff around here. So that was kind of like the gist of what they wanted," Barnes said on June 9 about when he was approached about the mural.

"We left it open for interpretation in our request for proposals," said Leadership Hermosa Beach's Matt McCabe, its project leader. "We talked about what we wanted to celebrate in terms of Cypress, the history, but also attract attention to get people interested in the businesses in the area, and he captured all that with his rendition."

Leadership member Emily Rosener said for many who visit the unveiling on Saturday it will be the first time in the Cypress District and "meeting the different artists and small businesses out there."

For decades, the Cypress District has been the home of surfboard shapers, art galleries, and a variety of other creative businesses.

Rosener said Leadership Hermosa Beach, which has been developing projects throughout the city since 2004 when each class chooses a new project, is cross promoting with the Hermosa Beach Fine Arts Festival, which takes place on the Community Center Lawn on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14.

The Fine Arts Festival features more than 100 juried artists, as well as student art exhibitions, face painting and other activities for youths, according to its website. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.

The free mural unveiling takes place at 5:30 p.m. and will feature live music, local food and drink vendors.

The mural is on the north-facing side of the building.

Parking is limited in the area, Rosener said, so they encourage attendees to bike or walk.
