Man rescued after threatening to jump from 101 overpass in Oxnard

Authorities rescued a man who who threatened to jump from the overpass to Highway 101 at Oxnard Boulevard June 22.

Callers began to report the man "straddling the overpass" around 8 a.m., and officers from the Oxnard Police Department went out to the scene, said Sgt. Mike Wood. He was unsure if Oxnard police or the California Highway Patrol would be overseeing the incident.

Wood said Oxnard police had several officers trained in crisis negotiation at the overpass but he did not know if their services would be used or not.

Based on initial CHP reports, traffic on portions of the highway near the site was temporarily being halted while public safety personnel responded.

Wood said the man was eventually talked down from the overpass using a fire engine ladder. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The closures were reopened around 9 a.m.

CHP could not be immediately reached.
