Man at Amtrak station dies after stepping in front of train

A man died Friday morning at the Amtrak train station in Merced after he deliberately stepped in front of an oncoming train, police reported.

The man was not identified.

Witnesses said that, shortly before 7 a.m., the man stepped off the platform onto the tracks and faced the oncoming train, said Merced police Capt. Tom Trindad. The train was traveling at a high rate of speed, and the man died at the scene from the impact.

The motive for the man’s actions is unclear, Trindad said, but his actions appeared deliberate. Police did not rule the incident as suspicious and were not treating it as a homicide.
