Tie for Le Grand school board seat
As far as school board races go on the Nov. 4 general election ballot, it doesn’t get any closer than the outcome for the Le Grand Union Elementary School District.
In balloting for the Area 5 seat on the five-member board, candidates Freddie R. Chavez and Emily Palmer finished in a dead heat with 48 votes each.
They were competing to fill the trustee position vacated by Ernie Fausone.
Rosina Hurtado, the district’s superintendent, said the tie between Chavez and Palmer will be decided at the Dec. 9 board meeting by lot, a board-approved process for breaking such a deadlock.
In 1997 there was a three-way tie for two board openings when the “by lot” method was used to break the deadlock, Hurtado said.
