One arrested in Atwater homicide

One man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of a man a day earlier outside Memorial Park, the Atwater Police Department reported.

The names of the both the victim and suspect were not released.

Multiple shots were reported around 5:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Park Street, near Elm Avenue.

The victim, believed to be a 27-year-old man, was flown to an area hospital with multiple gunshots wounds, where he later died, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.

“We are seeking multiple suspects and the vehicle they were in,” Joseph said.

Investigators said they are looking for two to three men who left the scene in an unknown vehicle, possibly white.

Residents in the area, who asked not to be identified due to safety concerns, reported hearing about a dozen gunshots

This is the 26th homicide of the year in Merced County and the fourth in Atwater.
