Atwater man jailed in connection to gunshots

An Atwater man was jailed Monday, accused of firing shots from his home last week while on federal probation, police reported.

Atwater police responded to reports of gunshots Thursday evening in the 100 block of Peach Tree Avenue. When they arrived, they found six bullet casings, but no one was injured and no houses were struck, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.

Police determined Deshawn Chambers, 37, lived in a home near where the casings were found. Chambers was on federal probation for weapons charges. Police were unable to contact him when investigating. In previous encounters, Chambers had been found to be dangerous or displaying odd behavior, police said.

With the help of the U.S. marshals and the U.S. Probation Office, Chambers was arrested Monday and booked into Merced County Jail, Joseph said. He was found in possession of a gun and a large amount of marijuana, which investigators believe was intended for sale. Investigators also found a small marijuana garden outside of his garage. Investigators determined the gun was stolen in Merced County this year.

Chambers was jailed on suspicion of negligent discharge of a gun, possession of narcotics for sale, being a felon in possession of ammunition and a gun, and being in possession of stolen property.
