Scam uses Merced Irrigation District name

The Merced Irrigation District is warning Merced County residents of a possible scam using its name.

MID was alerted Wednesday to social media messages in which Modesto residents reported being visited by salesmen who claimed to be with the Merced or Modesto irrigation districts and requested entrance to their homes.

MID is warning residents that it does not have sales employees and it initiates contact with its customers by telephone.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office had not received any reports of the possible scam but was aware of the situation, officials said.
