Project Prom to offer more than 1,000 free dresses to students

Project Prom organizers this week still are accepting donations and working to organize the more than 1,000 dresses available for free to high school students in a Saturday giveaway event.

Project Prom will have all styles and colors of dresses available for any high school girl with a valid student identification card at an event that will include raffle prizes, entertainment and refreshments.

The event is put on by the Bay Area chapter of Hmong Women Today. The group believes no girl should miss out on prom because they cannot afford a prom dress.

The event is at Alliance Church of Merced on 1171 Old Lake Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Guests will receive a choice of dress on a first come, first-served basis.

Donations can be dropped off to various Merced sites until Thursday. Donations still will be accepted at Alliance Church on Friday and Saturday.

Those who wish to donate can drop off dresses at the following locations:

  • Alison Nicole Nail Company: 1717 Canal St. in Merced
  • United Way: 658 W. Main St. in Merced
  • Pocket 8’s Sushi and Grill: 9 W. Alexander Ave. in Merced
  • Lee’s Community Food Market: 37 E. 15th St. in Merced
  • UC Merced Library: 5200 N. Lake Road in Merced.
