Atwater man killed when vehicle overturns off Highway 99

A 19-year-old Atwater man was killed Sunday when his vehicle drifted off the highway and overturned, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, had been traveling south on Highway 99 about 6 a.m. when his 2004 Chevy Tahoe drifted off the roadway for unknown reasons, the CHP said.

The Tahoe overturned into a ditch south of East Atwater Boulevard. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected as the vehicle flipped over, according to the CHP.

The vehicle landed on the man, pinning him underneath. Officers who arrived at the scene found the driver unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
