Livingston Middle School dominated Merced County’s pentathlon competition in various academic subjects.

The pentathlon, a mini version of the high school-level decathlon, saw students compete over several days last week in events such as literature and fine arts, math, sciences, social science and the Super Quiz. This year’s theme was India.

Nearly 270 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students formed 30 teams and competed in Honor, Scholastic and Varsity divisions.

The Super Quiz competition is a relay-type competition different from that of the other written testing formats. It’s the only event open to the public, and parents and other supporters cheered students on at the event, held March 5 at Golden Valley High School.

Winners honored during a ceremony Thursday included:

  • Sixth grade: Tyler Waltman, from Charleston Elementary in Los Banos, was the overall top-scoring student. The Super Quiz and overall school winner was Westside Elementary School in Los Banos Unified.
  • Seventh grade: Skylar Shyrock from Los Banos Junior High was the overall top-scoring student. Ballico Elementary won the Super Quiz. Livingston Middle School was the overall school winner.
  • Eighth grade: Japjeet Uppal from Livingston Middle School was the overall top-scoring student. Livingston Middle School also won the Super Quiz and was the overall school winner.
