Livingston conference aims to empower young women
The Young Women’s Conference at Livingston Middle School on Saturday will focus on empowering teen girls and revealing the opportunities available to them through a series of workshops and guest speakers.
In its seventh year, the Young Women’s Conference has grown from hosting 50 girls its first year to serving more than 400 teens in grades seven through 12. The theme for this year’s conference is “Empower, enrich, inspire.”
This year’s event will feature workshops on programming, social media, self-defense, leadership, yoga, confidence, self-esteem, identity, fashion, beauty, hip-hop and tools for getting to college.
Three guest speakers will share their stories.
Daisy Salgado, 24, a Livingston High School graduate, will share her story about being a business owner, her travels to foreign countries and hard work.
Sandra Schiber, the superintendent of the Atwater Elementary School District, will speak on her passion for serving students and overcoming adversity.
Marcia Bettencourt also will share with girls her life story. Born in Brazil, Bettencourt immigrated to the U.S. and graduated from Livingston High. After pursuing an education in politics, she decided to become a teacher at Livingston High.
High school seniors who attend the conference may be eligible for scholarships. The event also will host informational booths and hold prize drawings.
Breakfast and lunch will be served.
Professional dress is encouraged.
The conference runs from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Livingston Middle School, 101 F St. in Livingston. For more information, contact Martha S. Nateras at 209-277-3056 or mnateras@muhsd.org.
