The Adventure Risk Challenge summer course is accepting applications for high-school age students interested in spending five weeks in Yosemite this summer.

First-generation students, English language learners and all other students hoping to experience a motivating and challenging outdoor experience are encouraged to apply.

The Adventure Risk Challenge summer course introduces students to the Yosemite landscape while stretching their physical, academic and personal limits during backpacking trips, hikes, kayaking and climbing. Students study language arts and environmental science, write poetry and essays, and practice public speaking.

The course is designed to connect underserved youth to the outdoors, said Will Fassett, a program director.

“ARC works with local high school students who wouldn’t otherwise have opportunities to go on summer adventures,” Fassett said in a news release.

Ashley Byrum, who participated in the program last summer, said the experience boosted her confidence.

“ARC taught me to face my fears,” she said, “no matter how hard it is.”

The program is scholarship-based, and partial to full financial support is provided to all 12 accepted students. The program is accepting applications until April 22. The program runs from June 21 to July 30, when a graduation ceremony is held.

Students must complete a short answer portion on the application, submit a letter of recommendation and go through an interview process.
