Victims of Highway 140 fatal crash identified
The Mariposa County Coroner’s Office identified two people killed Tuesday in a head-on collision on Highway 140 near Mariposa.
Melissa Anne Carter, a 47-year-old El Portal resident, and Tony Lane Record, a 56-year-old Midpines resident, died in the collision. They were the drivers of the two vehicles, according to the Coroner’s Office.
The crash occurred about 1 p.m. Tuesday east of the Briceburg Bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported. Carter was headed east in her 2011 Honda CRV while Record was driving west in his 1996 Dodge Caravan, the CHP said.
Carter crossed over the solid double yellow line, colliding with Record’s minivan, according to investigators.
Carter died immediately. Record died while being taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Record had one passenger in the front seat, Tim Todd Hartley, 48, of Midpines. Hartley, who suffered a broken hip, was airlifted to a Modesto hospital.
The CHP closed Highway 140 east of Briceburg in both directions. The road reopened about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
