The California Highway Patrol reported a late-night fatal crash Wednesday between a big rig and a pedestrian in Los Banos.

The CHP reported the incident about 11:15 p.m. at Pacheco Boulevard and Sixth Street in Los Banos, where the road is being repaved.

A 35-year-old male had just bought a Slurpee from 7-Eleven and was walking in a crosswalk toward a section of roadway that’s blocked off for paving. The CHP officer present at the construction site blocked the pedestrian’s path, asking him to avoid the construction area for safety reasons, witnesses said.

The man had stepped back in the crosswalk a few steps as the big rig was approaching when he was struck, witnesses said.

The big rig driver, a 68-year-old man out of Arizona, stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, said Officer Dean Emehiser, a CHP public information officer.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital Los Banos, where he later died from his injuries. The victim’s identity has not been released as the coroner works to notify his next of kin.
