Merced native receives a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel

Maj. Jeffrey Michael Burnett of Merced has been promoted to lieutenant colonel and is transferring to Fort Belvoir, Va., from the U.S Embassy in Cairo.

Burnett received a Defense Meritorious service medal for his time in Cairo. He has also been stationed overseas in Hawaii, Iraq, South Korea and the Netherlands, his family said in a statement.

Burnett graduated from California State University, Fresno, and was a second lieutenant through the ROTC program there.
