Ford recalls more than 36K vehicles. See affected models

Ford is recalling more than 36,000 Broncos due to an issue that could become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles, manufactured between 2021 and 2026, were fitted with a fender flare that may become loose and detach from the vehicle, according to the June 24 recall notice published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

Fender flares are an extension of a vehicle's fender, providing additional coverage for low-offset wheels and oversized off-road tires, particularly on trucks, Jeeps and SUVs, per RealTruck.com.

Here's what you should know about the affected Broncos, and what you should do if you have one.

Faulty fender flares

Ford Motor Company submitted a safety recall report to the NHTSA on June 24, detailing a problematic fender flare on Broncos produced from Oct. 1, 2021, to May 6, 2026.

According to the recall report, 36,046 2022-2026 Ford Broncos "may have been manufactured with tooling that did not meet" the automaker's standards.

Specifically, the vehicles' fender flares "may become loose and detach from the vehicle," including black and painted flares on the front and rear of both sides of the Broncos.

"A fender flare that detaches from the vehicle while driving can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash," the recall report states.

As of June 5, 370 warranty claims, 36 field reports and two customer reports have been filed with Ford globally. The company stated it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the loose fender flares.

Notification letters, remedy timeline

According to Ford's recall acknowledgement letter, those with a 2022-2026 Bronco may see a "gap, sagging, or misalignment of the fender flare" as it begins to loosen. Customers may also hear "rattling, clicking, or flapping noises, particularly at highway speeds."

Ford intends to alert its dealerships on Aug. 7, while initial notification letters will be sent to owners between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14.

Customers will also be able to search their vehicle identification numbers, or VIN, on NHTSA.gov beginning Aug. 7, using recall number 26S47. The NHTSA campaign number is 26V403,

Once the remedy is available, Ford will issue another round of letters to its consumers sometime in late August. The remedy, which includes repairing the fender flare with new push pins or replacing it altogether if it's missing, will be free of charge.
