One of largest ranches in California – 25,000 acres in Sierra foothills – listed at $21 million
In what is believed to be the third-largest ranch property offering in California, nearly 25,000 acres in the southern Sierra foothills has hit the market at $21 million.
Elliott Land and Cattle Ranch borders Sequoia National Park and stretches westward from the Kaweah River to Highway 245 in Tulare County, taking in stunning scenery, rolling countryside and mountainous grazing land.
“The sheer size of this Sierra foothills treasure with its diverse topography, great access, plentiful water and forage gives almost unlimited opportunity to create your dream of the perfect western cattle ranch,” according to the property listing.
Listing agent Alan Drew of La Tierra Home and Ranch said “the diversity of topography, habitat, recreational possibilities ... just the variety of possibilities in general, the views , the wildlife” make the property unique.
The property includes ranch headquarters with employee residences, horse and hay barns, shops, pastures, paddocks and corrals.
The ranch has historically carried 1,000 mother cows year-round.
“From a livestock point of view, it’s about the variety and of forage,” he said. “The difference in elevation provides for different timing of forage growth.”
Rolling oak woodland and grassland extend in elevations from 4,069 feet at Shadequarter Peak down to 1,000 feet around Cottonwood Creek, according to the listing. The abundant water throughout the ranch comes from year-round and seasonal creeks, springs, ponds and wells.
There’s an abundance of wildlife on the property: deer, wild boar, black bear, dove, quail, turkey and pigeon. Fishing opportunities abound along two miles of the Kaweah River and in trout streams in nearby Sequoia National Park.
Drew said the views are also remarkable. To the east is the snow-covered high Sierra; to the west, San Joaquin Valley.
“The hillsides at this time of year are covered in wildflowers mainly poppies and lupine,” Drew said. “The eastern part of the ranch has places that are steep and dramatic. The western potion is more gentle.”
The ranch is owned by Elliott Land and Cattle Company, he said. The principal owners “have had fun on the place over the years, but are ready to move on to other things,” Drew said.
“The principals are at an age where they would rather spend time elsewhere,” he added.
Elliot Land and Cattle offers a lot of possibility for potential buyers, he said.
“This ranch could be ideal for a rancher, an outdoors person or group interested in the tremendous recreational possibilities on a large private property , an individual or group interested in conservation of a very large property and watershed, or a combination of all of these,” Drew added.
