An off-duty University of California police officer eating at Nation’s Giant Hamburgers in San Pablo fatally shot an armed robber, sheriff’s officials said.

A robbery at a California burger restaurant interrupted the lunch of an off-duty police officer, who fatally shot the robber, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident took place at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at Nation’s Giant Hamburgers in San Pablo, according to a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Amanuel Moreno, 29, of Richmond entered the restaurant and robbed the cashier at gunpoint, the release said.

An off-duty University of California, Berkeley, police officer who was dining in the restaurant confronted Moreno and shot him once, sheriff’s officials said. Moreno died at a hospital.
