Are electric vehicles cheaper than gas-powered cars? California could help you buy one

Editor’s note: This story was originally published March 9, 2022, and has been updated.

We’re posing the question: Is it more cost effective to switch to an electric vehicle and how can I get one in California?

Here’s what we know (it’s for you to decide what is best for you):

Are electric vehicles cheaper than gas-powered cars?

A 2020 Consumer Reports Study found that battery electric vehicle owners spend 60% less to fuel their vehicles compared to the average car in their class. According to AAA, although owning an electric car is about $600 more expensive annually, it’ll cost you less in individual categories: fuel, maintenance, repairs and tires.

But getting your hands on one is another challenge.

With looming gas prices and the ban on the sale of new gas-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035 — worry in switching to electric has been rooted in a few things: price, charging accessibility and time on the road.

In January, Newsom outlined a $10 billion zero-emissions vehicle package, built upon his 2035 plan, to make the electric-powered vehicles more affordable and convenient for Californians.

Some of the initiatives include:

  • Setting aside $256 million for low income consumer purchases.
  • Settling aside $900 million to expand affordable and convenient zero-emission vehicle infrastructure access in low-income neighborhoods.
  • Planning and developing various charging station options in communities.

How can I get an electric car?

Here are several ways to get an electric car at a lower price in California, depending on your eligibility:

CLEAN VEHICLE REBATE PROGRAM

You can receive up to $7,000 to purchase or lease a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, battery electric vehicle or a fuel cell electric vehicle in the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Program. The program offers vehicle rebates on a first-come, first-served basis.

See if you’re eligible on the CVRP website.

FEDERAL TAX CREDIT FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

All electric and plug-in hybrid cars purchased new in 2010 or after may be eligible for a federal income tax credit up to $7,500. To get started, filter by vehicle type or manufacturer on the official U.S. government fuel economy website.

DRIVE CLEAN INCENTIVE SEARCH

Search Drive Clean’s California incentive database, put together by the California Air Resourced Broad, and find a new or pre-owned electric vehicle.

CALIFORNIA CLEAN FUEL REWARD

With the California Clean Fuel Reward, you could buy or lease a new electric vehicle and save up to $750.
