A freshman at San Jose State University died on Oct. 21 after being hit by a school bus while on an electric scooter, officials said.

An 18-year-old freshman football player at San Jose State University was killed after the electric scooter he was riding collided with a school bus, media outlets reported.

Camdan McWright, who would’ve turned 19 years old in December, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 7 a.m. on Oct. 21 in San Jose, California, according to a Twitter post by San Jose police.

“We lost an amazing young man tragically this morning. Camdan had a bright future ahead of him,” said the the school’s head football coach, Brent Brennan on a tribute page for McWright. “Everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that.”

McWright was southbound on the e-scooter and crossing S. 10th Street as the public school bus was heading east on Reed Street, according to SF Gate. The bus entered the intersection and the teen passed right in front of the bus.

“The bus wasn’t able to stop before colliding with the male,” Ross Lee, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson told SF Gate.

The bus, which had a green light, was carrying 14 students from San Jose Unified School District, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. No one on the bus was injured.

McWright was the two-time football MVP of the Camino Real League while playing running back for St. Genevieve High in Panorama City, California, according to San Jose State’s online sports media guide.

He played in one game for San Jose State this year, carrying the ball 3 times for 6 yards in a 40-7 win over UNLV on Oct. 7.

“The San Jose State community is a very close one, and the campus is devastated. We lost a very bright, talented young man too soon. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the McWright family,” said the school’s director of athletics, Jeff Konya, on the tribute page.
