Where is it snowing in Northern California? Weather service expects more to come

Another winter storm is dusting areas in Northern California with fresh snow.

Snow started to stick to the ground Friday in the northern Sacramento Valley, including Redding and Red Bluff, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to last through this afternoon.

At 6 a.m., the Sierra Avalanche Center issued a backcountry avalanche warning through to Saturday morning for the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains and the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Where is it snowing?

Snow was seen accumulating just after midnight on traffic cameras in the Redding area, elevation 560 feet, while the cold precipitation was “sticking to the road” in the Red Bluff area, 305 feet, around 3:30 a.m.

As a result, Caltrans has stopped all northbound Interstate 5 traffic at Fawndale Road, about 10 miles north of Redding. Southbound traffic is being halted at Edgewood north of Weed.

Forecasts indicated snow could fall at the 500-foot level across portions of the Sacramento Valley. Snowfall has also been reported along the Central Coast at low elevations and in portions of the Bay Area. Parts of Southern California are also seeing unprecedented mountain snow.

Official measurements from overnight snow accumulation are not yet available. Here’s where it’s falling in Northern California:

Auburn: Near the Auburn Municipal Airport area, forecasts show snow and rain showers will turn to just rain after 11 a.m. with total daytime snowfall at less than a half inch.

Esparto: Radar images at 4 a.m. indicated snow was falling in parts of western Yolo County, west of Esparto.

Redding: Forecasts for the Redding Municipal Airport area show snow showers to 11 a.m. with highs near 45 degrees. Total daytime snow accumulation is expected at about 1 to 2 inches. Snow showers could return to the area Tuesday before 10 a.m.
