Can I drive with weed in my car? California cannabis laws to know before you travel
Recreational cannabis use is legal in California, but you might want to think twice before you pack your bud for your next trip out of town.
Despite its legalization, marijuana laws can get tricky, especially if you’re traveling.
Here’s what to know before you hit the road or board a plane:
Crossing state lines with cannabis
Federal regulations say you can’t bring weed to another state, even if you’re coming to and from a state that legalized it.
Driving with weed
You can drive with marijuana in your car in California, but it has to be in a sealed package or container or placed in the trunk.
Police can pull you over and conduct a sobriety test if they think you are under the influence.
Flying with weed
Some California airports, might allow you to bring a legal amount of up to 28.5 grams, as it’s legal in the state.
Weed, however, isn’t legal on the federal level.
Once you reach the Transportation Security Administration at the airport, federal regulations will take hold. If a TSA officer finds any potential violations of the law, they can report it to local, state or federal authorities. They will then determine whether you can proceed with traveling with the cannabis product.
Weed on public transportation
In general, it’s illegal to have weed in an open container whether you’re driving or sitting in the passenger area. And be sure to check the transportation service before taking weed with you.
If you’re riding on Greyhound Lines, don’t bring your bud. Weed is prohibited on the bus, including the baggage area underneath the bus.
Amtrak trains, stations and buses also prohibit smoking and transporting marijuana.
