Rep. Nancy Pelosi undergoes hip replacement surgery in Germany after fall on delegation trip
Former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is recovering at a U.S. military hospital in Germany following hip replacement surgery after suffering an injury during a fall Friday at an official engagement in Luxembourg.
“While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement.
Krager said Pelosi, 84, was “well on the mend” and “is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals” and “looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
According to the Associated Press, Pelosi thanked the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center hospital care, as well as the medical professionals in Luxembourg for “their excellent care and kindness.”
According to AP, Pelosi had tripped and fell while at the event and fractured her hip. She was the second Congressional stalwart to suffer a fall during the week after Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell sprained his wrist and cut his face stumbling outside a Capitol Hill luncheon.
“Pelosi continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” her spokesman said.
The San Francisco Democrat has served in the House for 36 years and was reelected in November to her 19th two-year term. She served as speaker of the House twice before stepping down from her leadership post two years ago.
