Man standing on rocks is swept into water in high surf and dies, California cops say
A man was hit by a wave and swept into the ocean in California, deputies said.
Although rescuers found him in the water and tried to save him, he died, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 2 post on Facebook.
The man, whose name and age weren’t released, was standing on rocks in Gerstle Cove in Sonoma County with another person when a wave swept him away, deputies said.
A rescue helicopter “arrived and located a male in the water,” taking him to land, according to deputies. First responders performed CPR, but the man was pronounced dead about 50 minutes after the call for help came in, deputies said.
The man and his companion had been fishing, CBS News reported, citing fire officials.
A high surf advisory was in effect at the time in the county, according to the National Weather Service.
Sonoma County is about an 80-mile drive northwest from San Francisco.
