Best sandwich shop? Three California restaurants are among top in US, Yelp says
Sandwich lovers looking for a new favorite spot may find it in California, according to new Yelp rankings.
That’s because the Golden State is home to three of the nation’s Top 10 best places for the classic meal choice, according to results the review website Yelp published Tuesday, July 29.
Numerous other California eateries earned rankings in the Top 100.
Restaurants Sierra Subs and Salads in Three Rivers, Woods Deli in Huntington Park and Super Subs in Banning made the Top 10.
To create the list, Yelp said it studied sandwich restaurants across the country for factors such as the “total volume and ratings of reviews” that customers left over time.
“Yelpers love all the new house-made aiolis, chutneys, pâtés, and sauces these chefs are adding to their creations,” Yelp said. “Diners also give high praise to unique, delicious toppings like pickled vegetables and olive tapenade, as well as the artisanal breads like fresh ciabatta, garlic bread, or pretzel buns.”
Why the California sandwich shops are favorites
Sierra Subs and Salads in Three Rivers, near Sequoia National Park, took the No. 2 spot on Yelp’s Top 100 list.
The restaurant offers “gourmet, scratch-made sandwiches” served on a deck overlooking the Kaweah River, Yelp said.
One Yelp reviewer called the food “healthy and delicious! It’s exactly what you need for your hikes before or after.”
The eatery also ranked highly on the 2024 and 2025 Yelp lists of Top 100 U.S. restaurants.
Three Rivers is about a 70-mile drive southeast from Fresno.
Coming in at No. 5 on the list is Woods Deli in Huntington Park. Owner Robert Valdez opened the shop three years ago because he felt the neighborhood lacked fresh food options.
“Our community deserved better,” Valdez said, according to Yelp.
Customers rave on Yelp about the “fresh and clean” food at the shop. “Every time it’s great,” read one review.
Huntington Park is about a 5-mile drive south from downtown Los Angeles.
Super Subs in Banning rounds out the Top 10 for California at No. 10.
Yelpers praised the restaurant for its “superb sandwiches” and “small-town hospitality.”
“Don’t punish yourself by only getting the 6-inch — get the full foot-long! … You can thank me later,” recommended one review of the Asian Sub, a “baked-in-house French hoagie, packed with chicken, pickled cilantro, and cucumber, and a secret sauce.”
Banning is about a 25-mile drive northwest from Palm Springs.
Other top California sandwich spots
Beyer Deli in San Diego, Come On Over Cafe in Oceanside, The Dutch Sandwich Shop in Temecula and Aina’s Vegan Banh Mi in San Jose also made the Top 20 on Yelp’s rankings
Others in the Top 100 include The McBoodery in Isleton, Uncle Af’s in Agoura Hills, Wild Carvery in Burbank, The Lunch Spot in Palm Desert, Ake’Larry in Anaheim, Don Daisy’s in Glendale and Windsor Brown’s in Anaheim.
