Hiker falls on icy ground on Mount Whitney. ‘Quick actions’ saved his life
Rescuers recently saved three hikers on Mount Whitney in two separate incidents — including a man who called for help after falling on icy ground.
Inyo County Search and Rescue helped a hiker who had a medical emergency on California’s tallest mountain on Sunday, Nov. 2, the volunteer group said in a Facebook post.
Three search-and-rescue team members flew into Lone Pine from Fresno in a California Highway Patrol helicopter, Inyo County Search and Rescue said in the Monday, Nov. 10, Facebook post.
One of the rescuers was dropped in at Trail Camp, where the hiker was located.
While rescuers were preparing to transport that hiker to safety, another hiker nearby called for help “feeling unwell,” the nonprofit group said.
Rescuers then flew both hikers to Lone Pine for evaluation.
Hiker rescued after fall off Sierra Nevada trail
On Friday, Nov. 7, Inyo County Search and Rescue teams were called to Mount Whitney to help a hiker who had left the main trail near the so-called “99 Switchbacks” section.
The man was “climbing on the right side of the route when he slipped on icy ground and fell, sustaining injuries,” Inyo County Search and Rescue said in the Facebook post. “Two nearby hikers heard his calls for help and made their way to him.”
One rescuer “stayed to provide support,” the rescue group said, while another headed approximately 3.5 miles to Outpost Camp and called for help with a satellite messenger.
“She then hiked back up to rejoin her companion and the injured hiker,” Inyo County Search and Rescue said.
Eight volunteers with Inyo County Search and Rescue returned to Pine Mountain in a CHP helicopter to help save the fallen hiker.
A photo shared by the group on Facebook shows the helicopter landed on an icy and flat section of the mountain sheltered behind its peaks.
One of the rescuers went to Trail Camp while “another was hoisted to the accident site,” Inyo County Search and Rescue said.
“With the help of the bystanders, the injured hiker was secured in ... a roll-up litter designed for rugged terrain and hoisted to safety before being flown to Lone Pine,” the rescue group said.
Inyo County Search and Rescue thanked bystanders for springing into action to help the fallen hiker.
“Your quick actions made a difference,” rescuers said.
What is Mount Whitney? Where is it?
Mount Whitney is a 14,505-foot mountain in the Sierra Nevada — and the highest point in the contiguous United States.
A popular destination for hikers and climbers, the peak lies on the boundary of Sequoia National Park and Inyo National Forest about a 90-mile drive from Fresno, according to the National Park Service.
Despite its popularity, Mount Whitney is considered a “strenuous” hike with “rocky switchbacks, sheer cliffs and flowing waterfalls,” according to AllTrails.
“Reaching the summit of Whitney is an incredible accomplishment, but the journey is sure to challenge even the fittest of hikers,” the popular hiking website said, noting that the trail averages 550 feet of elevation gain per mile.
How to stay safe while hiking, climbing
Heading to Mount Whitney? Inyo County Search and Rescue said hiking or climbing there can pose “serious risks,” especially in the fall and winter.
“The upper sections of the main trail — especially the 99 Switchbacks — are covered in ice and extremely slippery,” the rescue organization said. “Mt. Whitney is not a casual hike.”
Rescuers shared these tips for staying safe:
- Acclimatize properly before heading to high elevations.
- Carry a satellite communication device.
- Exercise extreme caution. Conditions can change fast.
