Election results for Proposition 50 certified in California. What the numbers show

California election officials have certified the results of Proposition 50, last month’s high-stakes ballot initiative that hands Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers temporary control over drawing California’s congressional districts.

The measure, which passed with 64.4% approval, was framed by Democrats as a response to Republican-led gerrymandering in Texas and other states, and is expected to net the party as many as five additional U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterms.

Roughly 11.6 million Californians cast ballots, Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s office said Friday, marking the lowest turnout in a statewide election since the 2021 recall. The numbers confirm earlier trends showing lagging participation across much of the Sacramento region.

Vote-by-mail ballots made up the overwhelming majority, with more than 10.2 million returned, while fewer than 1.3 million Californians voted in person, Weber’s office said.
