What essential services are open or closed Fourth of July weekend? What to know

This year, the Fourth of July falls on Saturday.

What does that mean for essential services, such as mail delivery, banks, transit and government offices? And how will the holiday affect services Friday, July 3?

Here’s what to know as the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence:

When will Social Security checks arrive?

Most Social Security benefits are mailed throughout the month depending on the recipient’s birthday and will not be affected.

Will mail delivery be affected?

U.S. Post Offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery Saturday, July 4, but the postal service will operate as normal Friday, July 3, the agency said.

FedEx and UPS offices may have modified hours on Friday, July 3, and will be closed Saturday, July 4.

Will banks be open?

Federal Reserve banks and commercial banks will be open as usual on Friday, July 3, but some credit unions and local branches may close early for the holiday weekend.

All banks will be closed Saturday, July 4, for Independence Day.

Will mass transit be available?

Most mass transit agencies, including Regional Transit in Sacramento, will operate on reduced schedules on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, with some offering additional routes Saturday for those attending public fireworks shows.

Will public libraries be open?

Most public libraries in California will be open as normal Friday, July 3, and closed Saturday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday.

Will trash pickup be affected?

With the actual holiday falling on a Saturday, most trash pickup schedules will not be affected.

Will government offices be open?

Most city and county offices in California will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, for the holiday. Emergency services will be available as normal.

Most California state offices will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. State Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be open Friday and closed Saturday.

Federal government offices are also closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
