Truck driver injured in crash on Highway 99 in Merced County

A commercial truck driver suffered unspecified minor injuries Friday after his vehicle crossed into the oncoming lanes of Highway 99, near Delhi, and overturned in a ditch, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The identity of the driver and his trucking company were not immediately available.

The crash was first reported at 5:38 p.m. along Highway 99 near Collier Road. The driver was heading south on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed the median and continued into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes. The truck ran off the roadway, overturning in the ditch, Officer Moises Onsurez said.

Traffic was backed up to Livingston for more than an hour as one northbound lane was closed and emergency responders scrambled to the scene. It was not immediately clear when all lanes of the roadway would reopen.

Road crews from the state Department of Transportation were conducting traffic controls at the scene, Onsurez said. Officers were still working late Friday to determine whether any fuel may have spilled during the crash.

The truck driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
