Two injured in crash on Highway 59 in Merced County

Two Los Banos residents suffered injuries Wednesday evening when their vehicle overturned on Highway 59 just south of Sandy Mush Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver, Daisy Gamez, 18, suffered unspecified major injuries, as well as lacerations to her head. The passenger, Noemi Vasquez, 20, had injuries to her arms and hands, Officer Moises Onsurez told the Sun-Star.

Both women were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Updates on their conditions were not available Thursday.

The CHP said Gamez was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle north on Highway 59 just before 6 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, she made “an unsafe turning movement, causing her vehicle to veer onto the right shoulder and overturn.”

No other vehicles were involved.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to have been factors in the crash, Onsurez said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
