Update: One person killed in CA shooting that involved Tulare County deputies
One person was killed in a shooting that involved Tulare County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday morning in Tulare.
It was not immediately clear who was shot or by whom, but the California Department of Justice in an update sent at 4:20 p.m. confirmed that incident “resulted in the death of one individual.”
The state agency also confirmed it was taking over investigation of the fatal shooting.
The incident started during a welfare check around 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of West Matheny Avenue, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
At the scene, deputies were confronted by a man in the backyard of the home, spokesperson Ashley Ritchie Schwarm said.
Aside from the death, the conditions of those involved was also not clear Wednesday.
Last month, Tulare County deputies were ambushed while responding to a domestic violence call in Porterville. Deputy Randy Hopert, 35, was killed in the line of duty.
Law enforcement didn’t fire any shots during the conflict, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said. The suspect — David Morales, 59 — was ultimately killed by a Bearcat vehicle.
