Modesto police investigating homicide, nearby school placed on lockdown
Modesto police are at the scene of a homicide in the airport neighborhood.
Officers responded to a reported assault in the area of Monterey and Thrasher avenues on Thursday morning and found at least one assault victim.
The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit responded to take over the investigation. Police Chief Brandon Gillespie also arrived on scene.
Because a suspect may be at large, nearby Orville Wright Elementary School has been placed on lockdown.
Its principal sent a message to staff and families that was shared with The Bee.
The message says in part: “At approximately 9:30 a.m., the Modesto Police Department placed the school on precautionary lockdown following an incident near the (Airport) Market across the street from the school. Officers remain in the area as they respond to the situation.
“As a precaution, Orville Wright Elementary will remain on lockdown for an extended period of time while law enforcement completes its response.
“All students and employees are safe and secure on campus. Staff continue to support students and maintain normal classroom activities as much as possible during the lockdown.
“Please be aware that portions of Monterey Avenue and Empire Avenue are currently closed to traffic.”
