Authorities have identified a swimmer who drowned in the Tuolumne River over the weekend near a popular recreation area in Hughson as James Cagle, 44, of Turlock.

Investigators believe the death was an accident after Cagle entered the water Saturday afternoon at Fox Grove Fishing Access and disappeared, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.

According to sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Nathan Crain, Cagle was at the park with friends when he told them he planned to walk across the water. He subsequently fell into the river and disappeared.

Emergency responders were called to the area about 4:45 p.m. Saturday after reports that multiple swimmers were in distress.

Three people were reported to be having trouble in the water. A person operating a personal watercraft brought two of the swimmers safely to shore before emergency crews arrived, according to Modesto Fire Department officials.

Rescue crews located Cagle underwater and recovered his body. “Nothing suspicious,” Crain said. “This appears to be a tragic accident.”

The Sheriff’s Office investigation remains open while the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office determines the official cause and manner of death.

With temperatures rising and more residents heading to waterways, authorities reminded the public to wear life jackets, avoid swimming alone, drink responsibly and be mindful of swift currents and hidden underwater hazards.
