A second person has died following a fiery three-vehicle crash Saturday night on Ladd Road north of Modesto that investigators believe was caused by a speeding Porsche driver who may have been under the influence of alcohol.

Jon Burgess, 38, of Manteca, died Sunday at UC Davis Medical Center after suffering major injuries in the collision, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Aaron Fay confirmed Tuesday that Burgess died the day after the crash.

The crash has now claimed two lives. The driver of the Porsche, a 57-year-old Modesto man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has not yet publicly identified him.

The collision occurred about 9:35 p.m. Saturday on Ladd Road just east of Tully Road, near Salida Fire Station 13 and south of Del Rio.

According to CHP, the driver of a green 2026 Porsche coupe was traveling west on Ladd Road at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a black 2016 Ram pickup.

The impact caused the Ram driver to lose control, sending the pickup off the north side of the roadway where it overturned.

The Porsche continued southwest into the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with a white 2023 Mercedes SUV before catching fire, CHP said.

When first responders arrived, they found the Porsche engulfed in flames and blocking the roadway.

The Porsche driver died at the scene.

Burgess, who was riding in the Porsche, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he died the following day. CHP said both occupants of the Porsche had been wearing seat belts.

The Ram was driven by 27-year-old Ismael Gonzalez of Manteca, who suffered minor injuries. His five passengers — a 42-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl — were all properly restrained and either escaped injury or suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP.

The Mercedes was driven by 52-year-old Diana Ybarra of Oakdale. She and her passenger, 53-year-old Manuel Ybarra of Oakdale, both suffered major injuries. The CHP said both were wearing seat belts and were taken to local hospitals.

Fay said CHP’s preliminary investigation continues to indicate the Porsche driver was traveling at high speed before rear-ending the pickup, setting off the chain-reaction crash.

Investigators also continue to believe alcohol may have been a factor for the Porsche driver, though Fay said authorities are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results before making a final determination.

Because the Porsche driver died in the crash, no criminal charges are expected, Fay said.

The roadway remained closed for about two hours and 30 minutes while officers investigated.

The investigation remains ongoing.
