A wildfire in Mariposa County escalated quickly on Wednesday, growing to 1,108 acres in a matter of hours, according to Cal Fire.

The wildfire near Catheys Valley, which has been named the Van Fire, was first reported as a 300-acre fire at about 2:35 p.m. By about 5:50 p.m., it had grown to more than 1,100 acres.

The fire is northeast of White Rock Road, Cal Fire said.

Cal Fire crews from the Madera-Mariposa-Merced unit have responded to the blaze. At 7:17 a.m. Thursday, Cal Fire reported the wildfire was 60% contained. The percentage indicates how much of the fire perimeter has been surrounded by a control line.

Eighteen tankers, six water tenders, three dozers and two hand crews were working the fire. A total of 112 personnel were involved.
