Several days of 100-degree or more heat expected in Merced County

Forecasters say this week is shaping up to be one of the hottest of the year so far in Merced.

Merced-area residents can expect several consecutive days of triple-digit heat, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.

Sunday was expected to reach 101, with temperatures climbing to 102 Monday and to 103 Tuesday and Wednesday, said William Peterson, a meteorologist technician.

“Things will cool off slightly after (Wednesday), but not by much,” Peterson said.

Temperatures edge downward to 100 before finally falling below triple digits Friday and Saturday — but the heat still is expected reach the upper 90s both days.

Any hope for rain in the near future?

“None at all,” Peterson said.

Some rain could fall this week near the crest of the Sierra Nevada, bringing the potential for dangerous lightning strikes on dry brush, forecasters said.

Still, rainfall totals in Merced County remain above average this year. Since October, the Merced area has recorded about 14.7 inches, more than 2 inches more than the average of 12.19 inches, Peterson said.

With at least five consecutive days of expected triple-digit heat coming on the heels of last week’s upper 90s and low 100s, local children likely will continue visiting area pools and places such as the Stephen Leonard Park splash pad.

County officials have been recommending residents drink plenty of fluids; dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothes; and keep physical activities to a minimum during the hottest parts of the day.
