Mariposa County reports first confirmed coronavirus infection

Mariposa County reported its first confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday morning, according to the Mariposa County Health and Human Services Public Health Branch.

Mariposa’s first case comes a little over five weeks after the first case was confirmed in Merced County, which saw its total number of people infected with the virus rise to 116 after six new cases were reported on Tuesday by the Merced County Health Department.

The first case in Mariposa has been identified as a 23-year old female, who is currently isolating at home. The case is confirmed community transmission from an area outside of Mariposa County.

The contact tracing team is currently investigating, according to a news release.

There is no evidence of community transmission within Mariposa County, according to the Mariposa County Health and Human Services Public Health Branch.

Residents are reminded to follow the “Stay at Home” order by California Governor Gavin Newsom and to follow social distancing guidelines.

Of the 116 cases in Merced County, 40 of those are still active. Seventy-three people have recovered from the virus, meaning they have been symptom free with no medication for 72 hours. The number of deaths in Merced County remains at three.

More than 1,255 positive cases have been reported in the six county central San Joaquin Valley region, which includes Tulare, Madera, Merced, Kings and Mariposa counties. Fresno is still behind Tulare County for the highest number of cases.

Stanislaus County, as of Wednesday morning, has reported 312 total positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic, which includes seven death and 215 recoveries.
