One hurt in industrial accident in Atwater

A man working at Atwater Iron and Metal was flown to a Modesto hospital Tuesday afternoon with major injuries to his arm and shoulder after an industrial accident at the 860 Applegate Road business, police said.

The man was identified as Genaro Catano, 78.

Police said Catano was repairing a dump truck after 3 p.m. with the bed in a raised position. Catano was working partially under the bed.

Witnesses told police that Catano inadvertently pressed a lever on the truck, causing the bed to lower onto his arm and shoulder.

Catano was pinned between the dump truck’s bed and the vehicle’s frame. Workers used a front loader to lift the dump bed off Catano. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and Catano was taken to a hospital.

Police had initially said the man was injured when metal fell on him in an accident involving a front loader.
