Standing at M and 16th streets in Merced, about 30 people chanted and held signs on Friday in support of protests in Baltimore related to the death of a black man in police custody.

Crissy Gallardo, a community organizer, said the demonstration carried several meanings, which included a show of solidarity with demonstrators in Baltimore, where Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died after suffering a spinal cord injury in police custody

The Merced group also observed May Day, also called International Workers Day, a celebration of laborers and the working classes.

Baltimore authorities announced Friday the charges faced by six police officers who were involved in Freddie Gray’s death. State’s Attorney Marilyn J.
