Merced protesters show solidarity with Baltimore demonstrations
Standing at M and 16th streets in Merced, about 30 people chanted and held signs on Friday in support of protests in Baltimore related to the death of a black man in police custody.
Crissy Gallardo, a community organizer, said the demonstration carried several meanings, which included a show of solidarity with demonstrators in Baltimore, where Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died after suffering a spinal cord injury in police custody
The Merced group also observed May Day, also called International Workers Day, a celebration of laborers and the working classes.
Baltimore authorities announced Friday the charges faced by six police officers who were involved in Freddie Gray’s death. State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby says the officers repeatedly failed to get Gray medical treatment after his arrest and did not buckle him up inside the police transport van, contrary to a police department order.
