Fatal motorcycle vs. car crash reported near Atwater, CHP says

A 30-year-old motorcyclist from Winton died Friday afternoon collision near Atwater, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP Merced officers and Merced County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a vehicle versus motorcycle collision just before 2:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Avenue 2, CHP Officer Eric Zuniga said.

Lay failed to yield and the Nissan traveled into the path of the motorcycle, Zuniga said. First responders attempted CPR on the motorcyclist, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities don’t suspect alcohol or drugs to be involved in the collision, Zuniga said.

The collision caused major rush hour traffic delays on Santa Fe Drive, a major artery between Merced and Atwater. East and west traffic was diverted through Gurr Road and Franklin Road. All lanes opened up around 4 p.m.
