Three people displaced, dog killed in Merced house fire
A small pet dog was killed in a house fire that displaced three people early Thursday morning in Merced, according to fire officials.
Fire crews were dispatched to the 800 block of La Jolla Way at about 11:04 p.m., for reports of a fire inside a residence, according to Merced Fire Department Battalion Chief Mickey Brunelli.
Firefighters arrived on scene and reported smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters attacked the fire, holding it to the room of origin, Brunelli said.
“The cause is still under investigation,” Brunelli said. “But some of the occupants reported they lighted a candle,” which may have caused the fire, he added.
After receiving reports of multiple dogs inside the home, crews were able to locate and remove three dogs from the residence, according to Brunelli. One of the dogs was killed by the fire.
Brunelli said the fire was located somewhere near the back of the residence and no injuries were reported to the home’s occupants or firefighters.
