The Merced Engineering Department closed R Street to traffic between Main and 20th streets on Friday, according to a news release.

That stretch will remain closed until July 3, the release said, so motorists should avoid the three blocks of construction.

The work is part of about $1.8 million in street upgrades expected to continue on M and R streets in Merced until about mid-July.

Money for the projects comes from an already approved fund for capital improvements, which drew cash from Measure C, gas taxes and the Regional Surface Transportation Program Exchange Fund.

The work on R Street also includes replacement of a water main.

Madera-based Avison Construction Inc. was awarded the renovation job in December.
